Root beer: Virgil's

Vancouver, BC

I was quite hopeful for this one, as the store that I found it in had kegs of it available as well. Not the root beer optimist however, I ended up getting a single bottle as a sampler. And I’m glad that I did, because this one isn’t so hot.

It doesn’t have the weird aftertaste of the Real Brew, but it does have more of a, dare I say, rooty flavour which might just be a tad heavy on the licorice root. Carbonation was quite good, colour was fine, perhaps a bit dark. It was alright, but I wouldn’t make a trip out for it. It was a combination of factors which caused this one to be voted out, nothing stands out as the single worst thing about this one, it just didn’t agree with me. This one was also $1.49 at Choice Market in Yaletown (Vancouver). I can’t remember the cost of one of the kegs that they had, but as much as a keg of root beer appeals to me, I just couldn’t do it.

As a side note, my friend Chris was visiting me in early August and we also made a root beer run and he wasn’t a huge fan either. Obviously tastes do vary, and they must sell it to someone because they continue to stock it–in keg size as well no less.
